Annotation

This analysis of the discourse-pragmatic functions of the causal marker inui in Taiwanese Southern Min (TSM) conversations, demonstrates that inui is interactively controlled and deployed to attain mutual respect. It is especially used when a speaker identifies the need to offer the addressee a better and more kind conversational ground in order to evade face threat, to settle a trouble of talk, or to bridge an information gap.
