In Iceland, a high L2 English proficiency level is obligate for tertiary study and a job. Young people in higher studies and labor discuss their perceived English skills and their actual and expected future English language practices. Consequences for English instruction in Iceland are advanced and it is indicated that Iceland is situated outside accepted motivation frameworks given its high English exposure.
