Annotation

This study demonstrates that the context's syntactic complexity positively influences incidental novel word acquisition during reading in L2 German, causing learner attentional shift from text to word level. However, the memory traces of the novel semantic representation are still very feeble and their retrieval is perhaps impeded by more intense semantically linked representations with much reduced activation limits.
