Annotation

This article explores other-initiation of repair's intonation in Standard Vietnamese and assays its interplay with lexical tone at the word level. Outcomes from both single-and multi-word expressions display that speakers mainly employ a rising pitch contour to mark other-initiation of repair. This rise emerges systematically at the right edge of expressions and may be assayed as a phonetic reflex of a high boundary tone that can overlap, partially or totally, with the lexical tone of an utterance-final word. Farther, the article shows the appliance of talk-in-interaction to the assay of the link between lexical tone and intonation in tone languages.
