This paper employs conversation analytic methods to explore how parents and children orient to word meaning issues. Findings point out that family members show a K− epistemic stance towards word meanings via repair and candidate comprehensions, and achieve other actions by showing a K+ epistemic stance towards word meanings. This paper displays how these orientations to word meanings are not each time didactic in nature, but plainly part of daily family life.
