The hospital-based care of obese pregnant women is intricate. Current guidelines advise early epidural analgesia, but there is dissent about the guidelines and their implementation by anesthesiologists. This inquiry conducted semistructured interviews with 42 specialist anesthesiologists about their experiences implementing the “early epidural” recommendation. It explored the influence of intergroup identity and system factors on the language employed by anesthesiologists to voice their experiences, framing the work by social identity and communication accommodation theory. Findings pointed out that anesthesiologists voiced their role mainly as technical experts, along with the core value of accommodating patients’ wishes.
