This study explores and compares (the pragmatics of) refusals, negotiated and understood by adult female native speakers of American English and Japanese. For all participants, a fortunate outcome contained a speech act set negotiated via several conversational turns. Americans frequently provided alternative plans and emphasized the importance of honesty whereas Japanese participants often implied refusal, employing postponement.
