He arrives at five features crucial to the recognition and labeling of advertising as such; goes on to examine its relation to the social context in which it functions; describes its communicative dimensions and ways of adressing the audience; comments on verbal and visual patterns aiding persuasive purposes; and considers advertising as a cultural system.
