Annotation

The application of Brown and Levinson's politeness theory to contrastive analyses of English and Greek politeness phenomena, shows a Greek orientation toward more 'positive' politeness. The extent to which politeness can be considered a universal concept is also dealt with as does politeness as a potential source of intercultural miscommunication. Although manifestations of politeness can be culture-bound, S. argues that no nation can be assessed as more or less polite.
