Annotation

This paper argues that literacy influences cognition indirectly, via the invention and acquisition of a complex range of concepts for talking about texts, expressed in a metalanguage. An empirical examination of children's knowledge of these specialized devices for referring to talk and thought indicates that they are acquired in the later school years. Their sources, development, and implications are discussed.
