Abstract

This book explores metonymy from a cognitive linguistic perspective. The discussion of metonymy extends beyond the traditional domain of semantics to include pragmatics, morphology and syntax. The author provides a detailed account of the major theories on metonymy and suggests a new approach to the study of metonymy that takes into consideration his Polish perspective. By emphasizing the absolute centrality of metonymy as a conceptual phenomenon, the book suggests to integrate linguistic analyses with biological, neural and evolutionary observations.
