In the past month Oracle has launched a $6.3 billion hostile takeover of PeopleSoft; Idec and Biogen have joined forces in a $6.4 billion stock swap; and a host of bidders have offered as much as $15 billion for Vivendi Universal's entertainment assets. After watching the number of deals in the U.S. fall steadily in the past several years—to fewer than 7,000 last year from a high of more than 12,000 in 1998—Wall Street is buzzing over the recent spate of merger proposals.
