Szwedek, Aleksander. 2004. Are structural metaphors structural? 13 pp.

Abstract

The paper questions Lakoff and Johnson's division into ontological and structural metaphors. Lakoff 1993 defines metaphors as 'mappings, that is, sets of conceptual correspondences'. Szwedek argues that similar sets of correspondences (in terms of parts and functions as elements of structure description) are found in the structural metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY as well as in the ontological metaphor; MIND IS A MACHINE.
