Abstract

This paper discusses the conceptualizations of FEAR and PANIC in financial news reports in a 694,270 words corpus of American broadsheet news reports dealing with the 2008 global financial crisis. The source domains ORGANISM and LIQUID were chosen for the comparison. Both source domains highlight the target domain EMOTION similarly. The two emphasize the intensity, stability and influence of emotion. Moreover, ORGANISM specifies the creation of emotion, proving in turn that fear and panic have different origins. A larger corpus would be necessary in order to offer a more comprehensive analysis of highlights in the different source domains associated with fear and panic.
