Sango is characterized as a pidgin/creole produced in contact of Ubangi languages in Central Africa, and the use of 'mu' in the meanings "transfer", "take", and "give" in this language is investigated within the theoretical framework of the idealized cognitive model (ICM) (Langacker, Ronald W., 1991). The study is based on 279 occurrences of this verb extracted from a tape-recorded corpus of Sango, compiled from informants' (N = 47) spontaneous speech samples collected in 1990-1991. Image schemas for the prototypical use of 'mu' (the meaning "transfer") and its derived uses (the meanings "take" and "give") are proposed. The potential cognitive operations behind the image schemas, as related to semantic domains, are proposed. It is demonstrated that the 279 uses of 'mu' form an extensive polysemous pattern knit together by the cognitive operations metaphor and frame-addition, alone and in combination.
