Abstract

This paper analyzes the movement metaphors employed in news reports which focus on the Lisbon Treaty in English popular and quality broadsheets. After presenting a general overview of the Lisbon Treaty, the different metaphors and newspapers are analyzed. Metaphors are essential in the interpretation and understanding of the complex dynamics of Europe. By presenting European matters by means of recognizable schemata and scenarios, metaphors make them more readily accessible to the lay audience. The study presented in this paper is part of a wider project that aims to explore the most recurrent conceptual metaphors in a selection of British tabloids and broadsheets.
