Abstract

Tsur argues that poets play on the figure-ground relationship typically relied on in human perception (as described by gestalt psychology) to shift readers' attention and invert habitual modes of perception and thought, with examples from Dickinson, Sidney, Shelley and Beckett as well as from music and the graphic arts.
