Abstract

This paper is concerned with semantic inferences as conceived in terms of textual entailment. On the basis of data classified into different categories according to the level of linguistic analysis, it is argued that semantic inferences emerge from two dimensions, the logical and the linguistic, which are both at work. In analyzing the data, macro-categories are postulated, each one containing different phenomena, and metonymy is subsumed under the macro-category of reasoning. A decomposition approach to inference processing is thus proposed.
