Abstract

The lexical component in language production and comprehension activities is examined with special attention to English as a second language teaching and learning. Drawing on G. Lakoff and M. Johnson's 'Metaphors We Live By '(1980), a vocabulary teaching technique based on metaphor sets is outlined, following a brief discussion of the notion of the metaphor in cognitive semantics and its occurrence in colloquial English.
