This article draws upon the polyphonic theory of Bakhtin (1970a, 1970b) as well as certain concepts utilized by Ducrot (1984) to demonstrate some procedures involved in the construction of irony in Charaudeau’s semiolinguistics (1983, 1992, 2008). The author tries to show from a discourse analysis perspective some procedures that could contribute to the construction of irony assuming the trope as a language phenomenon that functions as a communication device to argumentative strategies, even if they are not presented in a non-conventional way. As an illustration, the author analyzes excerpts from the memoirs or life narratives of a French artist whose form of writing could be categorized as Bakhtin’s (1970b) Carnival literature.
