Abstract

This paper argues that mother tongue has a strong impact to object and gender categorization. Two picture matching tasks were conducted. Experiment 1 tested the responses of German and Arabic native speakers, wherein participants were asked to match pictures of inanimate objects with body parts. Experiment 2 tested the responses of Spanish native speakers and Persian-Spanish bilinguals. Results suggested that monolingual speakers categorized inanimate objects based on their mother tongues. On the contrary, bilinguals were not influenced by the presence of grammatical gender (in L2) in object categorization.
