Abstract

Based on the theoretical framework of systemic-functional grammar, this study aims at identifying the stylistic functions of ‘discollocation’ in the works of Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate for Literature in 1986. Considering ideational metaphors, metaphors of mood, as well as textual metafunction, discollocation is discussed. The author supports some critics ‘claim that Soyinka’s diction is often obscure and impenetrable, in comparison contemporary Chinua Achebe’s style. The study considers that discollocations help Soyinka foreground and compare ideas, but may also contribute to reduce the reading comprehension pace. Additional research on the phycholinguistic effects of discollocation are recommended.
