Abstract
This study deals with the definition of ekklēsia as the οἶκος θεοῦ by Timothy. It leads to the conclusion that, according to the Pastoral Epistles, both the ekklēsia and the oikos are the same, having the latter a broader meaning by which it is considered a patriarchal house, but not a household. In addition, the former has some political connotations and hence a public aspect. Furthermore, oikos has a metaphorical usage for a bigger community since in ancient times bigger communities (the cosmos, the polis, or an association) were described by means of the metaphor of the oikos. Thus, the ekklēsia is a universal space whose components acquire perfect legitimization.
