Abstract

The article investigates the conceptual motivation behind the form of signs in British Sign Language and American Sign Language. It compares 14 signs in the two languages and uncovers their metaphoric and/or metonymic motivation. A high degree of conceptual isomorphism is uncovered. Similar conceptualizations may, however, be realized with differing degrees of morphological complexity.
