Abstract
As idioms are crucial in everyday language and are believed as a phenomenon that is very closely connected with culture, many scholars have studied the relationship between idioms and cultural connotations, especially animal idioms. In order to compare differences and similarities between Chinese and English cultures, Chinese language experts have worked on methods to study idioms, such as: comparison of English and Chinese languages, metaphor understanding, context learning, origin tracing and translation comparison and contrast. Based on David Hawkes’ translation of The Story of the Stone, the article discusses English and Chinese animal idioms, cultural metaphors under different background and strategies of animal idioms translation.
