Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the role of ontological metaphors in how Darwin conceptualized and described three concepts, viz. Evolutionary change, species and natural selection. According to the author, both objectification and personification have a theory-consitutive role in Darwin’s approach allowing for the three reasons: they must have been an indispensable step in the framing of these concepts, they cannot be paraphrased into literal language, and, finally, they direct subsequent studies in that area.
