Based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory, this study investigates metaphorical extensions of Up and Down in English and their respective Chinese counterparts Shang and Xia. The data is selected from two corpora, spoken English section in COCA and spoken Chinese in BJKY. The results show that in both languages, words indicating directions of up and down in orientational metaphors are closely related to such source domains as TIME, SOCIAL HIERARCHY, STATES, SCOPE, and EXTENT. It further proves the universality of metaphor across languages.
