Abstract

As an integral part of Systemic Functional Linguistics, Halliday's grammatical metaphor theory mainly divides linguistic metaphors into ideational ones and interpersonal ones. This study, based on the Graduation in Appraisal Theory, intends to explore progressivity in ideational metaphor and interpersonal metaphor from the perspective of topology. It finds that the force in graduation is realized in process-transferring of ideational metaphor and mood-transferring of interpersonal metaphor, while the focus is reflected in nominalization of ideational metaphor and modality of interpersonal metaphor.
