Abstract
This paper studies the semantic potential of cognitive paradoxes underlying idioms. In addition, the role of cognitive paradoxes in indirect semiosis is analysed and the basic dialectic contradictions are identified. These contradictions function as a creative factor when forming the cognitive basis of meaning in indirect (derivative) nomination.
