This article discusses the problem of the asymmetry between form and content. The purpose of the paper is to specify the functions of irony in texts. The objective is to reveal the linguopragmatic aspects of the transformation of the contextual ironical meaning of a word. Irony is clearly shown to be a substantial conceptual category of a literary text; irony allows the authors to express their emotional and estimative attitude towards the reality represented.
