Abstract

This book, which does not intend to provide a complete companion to Baretti’s works, is focused on some intellectual and artistic-aspects of the author: the complex itinerary that leads to the threshold of the “literary Whip”, the making of travel books, the satirical grotesque activities and "playful" last English period. This work presents a portrait of Baretti which emphasizes his controversial thoughts about politics and writing, between the obsession of the “enemy” and the desire of literary transfiguration. This narrative tension is often represented, in the latest works of the so called “English period” of the author, by means of figurative language and in particular of metaphor. Images of the grotesque and the fantastic are thus supported by linguistic experimentation in the field of metaphoric language.
