This MA thesis investigates the morphological, semantic and pragmatic aspects of the “obscene vocabulary” of the Greek language. The author states that “obscene vocabulary” is a part of marginal “jargons”. Moreover, it is suggested that many loans and calques, originating from French, Turkish and Italian, are found in “obscene vocabulary”. The author also observes that many “obscene” expressions are highly polysemous and metaphoric and in most cases their literal meaning is limited to only one sense. It is also suggested that “obscene vocabulary” is subject to non-linear polysemy that is rooted in metonymy and metaphor.
