Abstract

The authors of this paper present a study on the language employed by children and adolescents in TV fictional discourse showing that specific linguistic choices contribute to the construction of youth identity and whatever is socially, culturally and even stereotypically connected with it, such as adults' negative reaction towards lexical items used by adolescents. It seems that certain words, for example taboo terms, like sex shop, are conceptually linked in the mind of an adult to the style resources of adult discourse, and not children and adolescence discourse, thus immediately giving rise to reactions like irritation, anger or surprise. This point is demonstrated by an example of fictional dialogue taking place between a mother and her three sons (aged 15, 11 and 9) that the entire study focuses on.
