Abstract

The writer focuses on the notion of metaphor. He comments and questions the approaches of Bickerton and Matthew and the one of Price, treating them as inadequate. The stance of the author is that linguists should go beyond the limits of word analyses and the system of signs in order to decipher metaphors. In particular, the understanding of metaphors requires the delineation of the interaction of the two entities that are involved in this conceptual mapping.
