Abstract

In the editorial, the question of whether or not using metaphorical expressions and analogies in scientific writing is addressed. In particular, the debate is claimed to arise from the growing misuse and abuse of metaphorical expressions in the scientific literature, the result often being one of “wordy trickery”. Thus, a more appropriate and balanced use of metaphors is suggested, when they serve the aim of facilitating the usability of the texts rather than displaying the authors’ artistry and virtuosity.
