Abstract

Following the traumatic experience of Holocaust, which was aimed at annihilating and humiliating both self- and community- identity, two reactions affected the Jewish community: either the loss of faith in God and the abandon of the Jewish cult, or the further strengthening of the sense of membership to that community. In the paper, the writer Cynthia Ozick is claimed to have directly tackled the question in her The Cannibal Galaxy, where through the creation of the two main characters, Joseph Brill and Hester Lilt, she provides the readers with the two possible scenarios of commitment to versus rejection of the Jewish tradition. In particular, Hester’s characterization as an healthy survivor is suggested to mirror Ozick’s idea of the belief in Judaism as the only way to face the trauma of the Jews persecution.
