Abstract
This paper presents the results of a systematic research into the use of different metaphors employed to convey a public health issue such as ‘obesity’. Metaphors of ‘sin’, ‘addiction’, ‘disorder’ and ‘environment’ attach different values to individual and environmental responsibility. The paper argues for a relationship between narrative classifications of obesity and support for public policy interventions.
