Abstract

Based on authentic data, the paper examines register variation in news broadcasting from seven Greek TV channels. A comparison of utterances presenting the very same incidents across the seven channels is realized. It is shown that differences in register and stylistics depend on the profile of each channel. Differences were identified in syntax and the semantics of utterances as well as in prosody. It is suggested that such a variation points to specific patterns followed in the in order to achieve an easily identifiable style (either neutral or too expressive) for each channel.
