Abstract

This article deals with the verbal, pictorial, and verbo-pictorial metaphors and metonymies in the genre of political cartooning by illustrating the frequent use and interaction of metaphor and metonymy in a corpus of 15 Spanish print political cartoon strips drawn from the popular newspaper El País mostly in 2011. 10 instances out of 15 Spanish print political cartoons by the cartoonists Erlich and El Roto are described and analysed in detail. Political cartoons have a number of characteristics: they are characterized by allusion to a socio-political situation, event or person, they describe mainly recent events which are combined with an imaginary world, they are satirical and critical in a joyful way. The main findings of this study illustrate that a number of metaphors identified and analysed in the sample of 10 political cartoons are metonymy-based.
