Abstract

Based on the information provided by Inpe – Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, the events that cause serious damages and calamities, having a negative impact on society and enviroment are classified as disasters. Due to their different origins, they are identified according to phenomena to which they are associated, so earthquakes, storms, floods and tsunamis can be natural phenomena which can be responsible for natural calamities. This paper aims to analyze some metaphors and their emergence in economic-financial discourse concerning the global economic crisis which are associated to natural disaster denominations. Since its major disclosure (2007), this crisis has been responsible for the (re)appearance of many metaphorical Lexical Items which are used to name not only actions and institutions, but also processes and practices, among others, based on their negative interference in the financial system of several countries, producing negative effects on the economy of the nations involved. So items like storm, deluge, and tsunami, for example, came into usage to identify those concepts related to the crisis. According to the Conceptual Metaphor and Frame Semantics theoretical bases, in this paper we examine some metaphorical expressions used in the news discourse concerning the crisis, which were published in Folha de S. Paulo, from August 2007 to December 2013.
