Abstract

The article dwells on the formation of appellatives derived from proper names, via metaphtonymy and other cognitive mechanisms (perspectivisation, defocussing, combination, completion, and elaboration). The conceptual content underlying a proper name is considered as a matrix-format piece of knowledge, or a cognitive matrix which unites cognitive contexts that determine the way the appellative is construed.
