Abstract

The paper examines political confrontation and aggressive speech in the Greek parliamentary discourse, based on a 326 files corpus of Plenary Sessions of the Hellenic Parliament. The theoretical framework combines insights from politeness theory and social constructionism research. The data are analyzed according to the Conversation Analysis methodology. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the excerpts indicates that offensive language and face-threatening strategies are common in the Greek parliamentary discourse. Moreover, the speakers often exceed the acceptable limits in terms of aggressiveness and derogatory forms of speech.
