Abstract
The topic of this dissertation is proverbs of the Modern Greek language. The author delineates the already existing definitions of proverbs and formulates another definition herself, giving a detailed account of the characteristics of Modern Greek proverbs in particular. One important trait is that they involve figuration; personification, metonymy, hyperbole, paradox, concretization, among others. However, literal proverbs also exist and are examined, as well. Finally, Greek proverbs are studied diachronically so that equivalences between Ancient or Medieval Greek and Modern Greek can be traced.
