This dissertation researches children's comprehension of metaphor and figurative language, in general, while commenting on the corresponding developmental stages. The aim was to find out whether the use of figuration is an early cognitive ability or it is to be expected during later developmental stages. The mechanism accounting for this kind of comprehension is referred to as "complexive-transmissive mechanism". The study provides numerous interesting findings on children's comprehension of figurative language, particularly metaphor, and comparisons are made with adults' comprehension.
