Abstract

The paper examines the conceptual metaphors for sin in an English translation of the Bible, specifically the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition (2007[1989]). The paper makes the assumption that basic human experiences include that of moral evil and notes the difficulty in defining the related abstract concept of sin from a semantic perspective. The metaphors for sin identified in the paper are motivated by sensorimotor or cultural experience in general and are analysed in several categories depending on their specific motivation.
