Abstract

The paper discusses the view that when individuals detect that a description is inconsistent, they produce minimal changes to make the explanation consistent, and challenges it by producing a different principle of resolution. The latter suggests that revision is consequent upon explanation. Hence, when individuals have such an explanation in mind, they should be faster than otherwise to modify assertions to make them consistent. Two experiments support this prediction.
