Translation is a useful though controversial activity in which issues of equivalence, faithfulness, and (mis)communication arise. When metaphors come into the picture, the challenges are greater. Metaphors are culture-bound cognitive devices and their transfer becomes a hindrance for professional translators. Should they use a more literal metaphor or a metaphor more culturally appropriate and natural in the target language? This article discusses these and other issues that aim to enlighten translators, readers, and students of translation alike.
