Abstract

Metaphor in the health science domain has been analyzed from several perspectives, including that of healthcare professionals, caregivers, and patients. In this chapter, I discuss the metaphors used to refer to the pituitary gland. Two are often used, namely that where the pituitary is thought of as the conductor of an orchestra and that where the pituitary is thought of as part of an axis. Their distribution seems complementary both diachronically and socially, that is, they have been used in different times and in different social contexts. However, a closer look reveals that while in the scientific discourse, the conductor metaphor is being replaced by the axis metaphor, the former is making a coming back.
