Abstract

This paper explores metaphors expressing evaluative meaning. More specifically, we aim to demonstrate that this device (and, sometimes, metonymy) is used to create attitude to facts of reality and thinking, and leading to the creation of utterances of evaluative character. The corpus comprises utterances taken from literary prose written in different Indo-European languages that come from Slavonic, German, and Romance groups. The instances demonstrate that, regardless of the linguistic culture of these groups, the metaphorical models and sub-models under study reveal the same or similar evaluative potentials. As a result, we can claim that the general method of creating the value relations which take the form evaluative utterances is the same despite the different linguistic cultures.
