Abstract

The current opinion about the role of Israel regarding the standoff with Palestine is chiefly critical due to the illegitimate occupation of the West Bank, impeding millions of Palestinians to stay at their homeland. However, Israel is still recognised as a country by most non-Islamic countries, which maintain diplomatic relations with Israel. The difficult situation around Palestine, particularly in the case of children forced to become refugees because of Israeli occupation, is being used by many writers and critics. This is the case of Abulhawa, who deals skilfully with language to show the personal tragedy, more than the political one (although this operates as the background), in Mornings in Jenin. This research project examines Mornings in Jenin by Abulhawa in order to analyse the use of literary metaphor regarding the reality in Palestine as well as the trauma provoked by the horror of Israeli violence against Palestinians in psychological and physical terms. This research project points at the way in which the author deals with the issue of who the factual terrorist in Palestine is. The results reveal that the literary text employs certain literary devices to represent Palestinian agony due to Israeli occupation as well as Israeli terrorism. Abulhawa, by means of the use of language, concludes that Palestinian resistance and terrorism is led by the occupation, aggression and brutality of Israeli. Abulhawa’s literary text is an attempt to justify Palestinian resistance provoked by Israeli factual terrorism. In other words, it justifies Palestinian ‘fair cause’ in order to resist Zionist colonization. In this paper we highlight the Abulhawa’s ingenious use of literary techniques to reach the effect desired on readers.
